Seton Hall University - South Orange(NJ) - The Department of Criminal Justice is devoted to
providing students with an academically sound program in the study of crime and justice issues.  The
program in criminal justice draws on the best traditions of a liberal arts education. Students are expected
to ground their ideas and observations about crime and justice within traditions that are empirically and
theoretically informed.

The study of crime and criminal justice at Seton Hall University is designed to give the students a critical
viewpoint concerning all dimensions of the criminal justice system. Graduates from the program can
pursue careers in criminal justice, or attend graduate school or law school.  A series of internships are
offered to criminal justice majors in both federal and state agencies.
Shippensburg University - Shippensburg(PA) - The mission of the Department of Criminal
Justice is to provide current and future criminal justice professionals with the background and skills that
will enable them to think critically about the problems of crime and justice and to be effective decision
makers in the criminal justice arena. Central to achieving this mission is an integrated program of study
designed to provide graduate students with the knowledge and skills to undertake independent, critical
investigation of issues related to crime control and justice policy. The Department was created in 1974
under the direction of Roosevelt Shepherd, its chair for 23 years. The initial curriculum was Law
Enforcement-oriented and, because the department had only two faculty, drew heavily from Sociology,
Psychology, Social Work, and Political Science for its courses. The result was a hybrid mixture of
courses that fragmented the identity of the department. In 1987, the Department of Criminal Justice
reorganized both its graduate and undergraduate curriculum to reflect the changing needs of our
students and the demands of the fields they will be entering. A second revision was fully implemented by
Spring 2001.
Sonoma State University - Rohnert Park(CA) - Welcome to the DepartmentThe Criminology and
Criminal Justice Department at Sonoma State University invites you to join us in the study of crime,
criminology, criminal justice and society.

The Major
We live in a rapidly changing society, one in which the criminal justice system is growing rapidly and
crime and criminal justice have become increasingly politicized. In light of these and other major
changes there is a great need for a critical understanding of the rapidly changing field of criminology
and criminal justice.

The criminology and criminal justice major offers a liberal arts curriculum concerned with the changing
nature and content of law, the shifting public expectations of criminal justice agencies, and the reactions
of those agencies to social perceptions and political pressures. The student is offered an
interdisciplinary academic approach to the understanding of the mechanisms of social control,
resolutions of criminal justice problems, and a knowledge of accepted procedures and alternatives.

This general but all-important background serves as a base for the areas of emphasis that are of
interest to the individual student. Fields of concentration such as adult and juvenile probation, law
enforcement, judicial administration, public advocacy, prevention and diversion, and correctional and
parole services are studied in detail from several perspectives. Criminology and criminal justice majors
are prepared to pursue careers in the field of criminal and social services as well as graduate education
in justice studies, law, criminology and other graduate fields.
Southeast Missouri State University - Cape Girardeau(MO) - The Department of Criminal
Justice provides undergraduates with a core of courses central to the discipline of criminal justice.
Students are also exposed to specialized courses as preparation for careers in law enforcement,
corrections and security. The department serves more than 300 majors and a large number of students
who enroll in criminal justice courses for elective credit.

The Department has an internship program which provides students with an opportunity to observe
professionals in their fields and with practical job experience. Students may continue course work at the
graduate level by pursuing the Master of Science in Criminal Justice degree.

The Department is recognized for its participation in national and regional meetings and its scholarly
activity.

Job opportunities include: law enforcement, probation, juvenile intervention programs, parole,
corrections, corporate security, executive protection and private investigations. SWAU graduates have
become police chiefs, patrol officers, law school students and police officers. One graduate was pursued
by two different national private security companies, and another has found employment in the
Department of Homeland Security.

What is unique about SWAU's program? Students in Criminal Justice are required to complete 120
hours of an internship for a law enforcement agency, law firm, judge's office or district attorney's office.
Professionals in law enforcement and security management are often guest speakers on the SWAU
campus. Students in the Applied Research Class undertake a specific research project and report their
findings.  Several past graduates have had their research published in the Texas Police Journal.

Are you interested in service to others? Are you responsible? Do you want to enhance the quality of life
in your community? Are you interested in criminal law? Do you want to work in a corporate environment?
Do you want to specialize in computer network security, management of security systems and personnel
or loss prevention?
St. Cloud State University - Saint Cloud(MN) - Criminal Justice is a decision making process that
incorporates the management and control of crime and criminal offenders. The objective of the criminal
justice program at St. Cloud State University is to prepare and educate tomorrow's leaders in such fields
as domestic and international law enforcement, courts, corrections, juvenile justice, and private security.

Why is the Criminal Justice Program at SCSU so unique?
Many criminal justice courses at St. Cloud State offer small classes, individual attention and close
student-faculty interaction. It was the first department at SCSU to require a Senior Thesis project and an
oral defense of the project.

The department also offers its own advising center, which is staffed by graduate assistants. The
department courses have many writing requirements designed to improve each student's
self-presentation skills. The program is located in Minnesota, which is nationally famous for its quality
innovations in its criminal justice system. Consequently, many of the students tap into the system for
"real life" experiences prior to graduation.

Additionally, its faculty are committed to quality teaching, research and on student development. The
department offers a very active criminal justice student association for those interested in enhancing
their education.

Location
The city of St. Cloud is located 65 miles northwest of downtown Minneapolis. Although the population of
the St. Cloud area is approximately 70,000, the city continues to have a small town atmosphere. The
campus is located within walking distance of downtown St. Cloud, and lies along the West bank of the
scenic Mississippi River close to several parks and attractive residential areas.
St. John's University - Jamaica(NY) - Criminology is an academic discipline that focuses on the
causes, consequences, forms, and responses to criminal behavior. In addressing these topics,
Criminology applies the methods of science and social science. The program's title also refers to
Justice. Part of this is the criminal justice system-police, courts, corrections-and the program includes
courses on these institutions. But the concept of Justice, as we mean it, is much broader and includes
such things as social justice and environmental justice. And we want to include these as areas of study.

Careers in Criminology
The field of Criminology and Criminal Justice is a growth area and a number of types of jobs are
available. The program aims to prepare students for several types of careers. First, through a series of
required courses on research methods and design students will obtain the skills that are prerequisites
for positions as researchers and analysts in government agencies and private consulting firms,
analyzing crime trends and evaluating the outcomes of programs and policies. Second, students who
seek to go into law enforcement or related agencies doing investigative work will benefit from the
substantive courses in specific areas of crime. For example, a popular course in Principles of Forensic
Science provides students with a critical introduction to the techniques employed in crime scene
investigations, as recently made popular in television shows such as C.S.I. Third, the program aims to
prepare students for further study leading to a Ph.D. degree that will enable them to teach at the college
level.
Suffolk University - Boston(MA) - In the shadows of the Massachusetts State House on historic
Beacon Hill, the Sociology Department is the largest among the 17 academic programs within the
College of Arts and Sciences. Residing on the 5th floor of 73 Tremont Street, the Department provides a
broad range of academic training to students from throughout the United States and abroad.

Department programs strive to provide students with academic and practical experiences through
classroom instruction, research training, and internship opportunities to enhance their potential for
professional success and achievement.

All resident faculty members are Ph.D.s and well versed on a range of issues in the field. Moreover, they
are actively involved in research on topics such as criminal corrections, domestic violence, fear of crime,
female offenders, hate crimes, masculinity issues, medical sociology, policing, restorative justice, and
technological influences. In addition, joint programs of study in the School of Law and Departments of
Management and Psychology provide students with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge in
interrelated areas within American society. Students with an interest in the broad field of criminal justice
beyond the baccalaureate level may also consider applying to the Sociology Department’s Master of
Science Program in Criminal Justice (MSCJ).

Overall, through its quality of education and location in Boston, Suffolk University students have the
opportunity to gain the necessary knowledge and experience to realize their professional goals and
make noteworthy contributions within the larger society.
SUNY - Plattsburgh - Plattsburgh(NY) - Criminal Justice at SUNY Plattsburgh is not a police
training program. You won't learn how to conduct a highway stop or put on handcuffs. You will become
familiar with law and the U.S. Constitution, and how our laws and rights apply to individuals. You will
compare and contrast crime and delinquency in urban and rural areas. You will learn the legal
foundations and theoretical premises that lay behind criminal justice practices. And you will become
familiar with the complexity of issues surrounding the criminal justice system.

Program Benefits
Our program emphasizes a liberal arts approach to learning, which will help you to become acquainted
with diverse fields such as political science, psychology, and sociology. You will build on those courses
with more specific course work in law, the courts, corrections, and juvenile justice. Our program is
flexible, which means that you can tailor it to fit your specific interests. And whatever your career choice
- be it police work, law, corrections, or administrative areas - you will graduate from our program well
prepared for these career challenges. You will also be an informed citizen who understands the
complexities of crime and criminal justice.

Plattsburgh State's bachelor of arts (B.A.) program in Criminal justice is a broad, social-scientific
approach to crime and justice. Students explore areas of study that seek to increase their
understanding of important social problems, such as crime, delinquency, and violence. They also learn
how to analyze and dissect the components of our criminal justice system. Subjects include the nature of
criminal justice, its history and philosophy, and its role in democratic society.
