New Mexico State University - Las Cruces(NM) - Founded in 1962, the Department of Criminal
Justice at New Mexico State University is one of the oldest Criminal Justice programs in the nation. It is
the largest academic department in the College of Arts and Sciences with over 600 Bachelor of Criminal
Justice students and 80 Master of Criminal Justice students. The mission of the Department is based
upon the understanding of Criminal Justice as a broad-based interdisciplinary social science field.
Students graduating from the Department are prepared for careers at the federal, state, and local levels
throughout the criminal justice profession, in both the private and public sectors. Graduates have also
gone on for advanced education in law schools and graduate programs in criminal justice, criminology,
justice studies, and political science.
Niagara University - Niagara(NY) - There is perhaps no field as interesting as the study of crime
and justice. The curriculum in Criminology and Criminal Justice utilizes a small classroom setting
environment to offer both full and part-time programs leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. Some
students link their degrees in other disciplines with a minor in Criminal Justice. Niagara University
combines a challenging faculty, balanced curriculum, fascinating outside speakers, and stimulating
internships while providing a broadly based educational experience. Whether the person begins as a
Freshman or is one of the many transfer students, the program is designed to provide the student with
an education in the liberal arts as well as a comprehensive background in the field of criminal justice.
The primary goal of the program is to assist the student in gaining employment upon graduation. The
second goal is to prepare the qualified student for graduate work in the social sciences or law school.
North Carolina Central University - Durham(NC) - North Carolina Central University was
chartered in 1909 and opened its doors to students in 1910 as the National Religious Training School
and Chautauqua. Dr. James E. Shepard, the founder, served as the President of the institution from its
founding until his death in 1947. From the beginning, North Carolina Central University has declared its
purpose to be the development in young men and women of the character and sound academic training
requisite for real service to the nation.
The institution's early years were characterized by a wealth of enthusiasm and high endeavor, but not of
money. Private donations and student fees constituted the total financial support of the school and the
heavy burden of collecting funds rested on the President. A consequence was the sale and
reorganization of the school in 1915 as the National Training School. During this period of its history,
Mrs. Russell Sage of New York was a generous benefactor of the school. In 1923, the General Assembly
of North Carolina appropriated funds for the purchase and maintenance of the school, which thus
became a publicly-supported institution as Durham State Normal School. Two years later, the General
Assembly redefined the mission of the school, naming it the North Carolina College for Negroes and
dedicating it to the offering of liberal arts education and the preparation of teachers and principals of
secondary schools. North Carolina College for Negroes (NCC) thus became the nation's first
state-supported liberal arts college for African American students.

The Criminal Justice Program emphasizes the importance of blending academic work with practical
experience in the field. In addition to field components in many course requirements, all criminal justice
majors are required to complete a 320 hour internship placement with a criminal justice related agency
or office. For specific details on the requirements of this placement Click here.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the program have opportunities in a variety of criminal justice fields including law
enforcement, probation, juvenile services, private security, public administration/planning, counseling,
research and regulatory agencies. In addition to entry level employment opportunities, graduates may
pursue advanced study in fields such as public administration, para-legal work, criminal justice and law.
For detailed information on these and other careers available with a criminal justice education two books
have been placed on reserve in the library under the name of Dr. Downing. These books are "Careers
in Criminal Justice" by W. Stephens and "Your Criminal Justice Career" by The Justice Research
Association.
Northeastern University - Boston(MA) - The College of Criminal Justice prepares the students for
professional and research careers in criminal justice, criminology, and related fields by applying
multidisciplinary and comparative social science to understand, predict, and explain crime and contribute
to the development of public policy within urban communities. Using an active learning approach, the
College seeks to develop its students intellectually and ethically, while providing them with a keen
appreciation for the complexities of crime and for public and private efforts to make communities safer
and ensure justice.
Northern Arizona University - Flagstaff(AZ) - The Department of Criminal Justice at NAU has
developed a unique curriculum relative to most other criminal justice departments in the nation. It
recognizes that the issues of crime and justice are complex, controversial topics that are open to a
number of different interpretations and approaches. Consequently, the department is committed to an
open intellectual environment that encourages teaching and scholarship from a diversity of theoretical
perspectives and research methodologies.
The department delivers a Bachelor of Science degree program in Criminal Justice, a BAILS
concentration in Criminal Justice, a B.A.S. in Justice Systems Policy and Planning, a minor in Criminal
Justice, and a Masters of Science degree in Criminal Justice.
The Bachelor of Science degree program in Criminal Justice exposes students to contemporary social
science knowledge regarding the relationship between law and society, the patterns and causes of
crime, the operations of the justice system in a multi-cultural environment, and the public debates and
ethical issues surrounding justice policies and practices. In addition to regular classroom courses the
department provides opportunities for students to develop their skills through service-learning
internships, undergraduate research, and independent studies.
The Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice is an integrated program of study designed to provide
graduate students with the skills to undertake independent, critical investigation of issues related to
crime and justice policy. The program’s core is designed to ensure that students acquire a graduate
level understanding of advanced theory and methods in criminology, justice system processes, and
contemporary policy debates regarding crime and crime control.
The MS degree program also provides opportunities for students to explore the impact of social factors
such as race, ethnicity, class, and gender on the crime problem and the administration of justice, to
examine the influence of politics, culture, economics, media, theory, and ideology on our understanding
of crime and our images of justice, and to develop skills in the implementation and evaluation of criminal
justice policies and the management of criminal justice institutions.
Northern Kentucky University - Highland Heights(KY) - The major in criminal justice is a
broad criminal justice program that studies the administration of justice and the resolution of conflict
within society.
More specifically, the major focuses on the three major aspects of the criminal justice system: police,
courts, and corrections.
Leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts, the major consists of a
21-semester-hour core and 21 semester hours of secondary requirements.
Core courses provide a conceptual understanding of criminal justice institutions
and processes, theories of crime and punishment, criminal law,
and social science research methods.
The program offers a major and minor designed to prepare students
for graduate studies and for careers in criminal justice and allied fields.
Rather than training individuals for a particular occupation through
instruction in specific vocational skills, the program offers a broad, liberal
education focused on the cultivation of analytical and creative thought
and on the ability to read, write, and speak effectively.
Students majoring or minoring in criminal justice must earn at least
a C in each course counted as part of the major or minor.

both doctorates and real work experience in their academic fields. Many occasions exist in our
department for students to put into practice what they learn through service-learning courses and
internships in the community; or through mentoring and tutoring at-risk youth. The in-depth internship
program works to match student interests with career options. In addition to local internships students
have taken advantage of national internships such as the Washington Center where students have the
opportunity to select from over 200 internships and work in our nation's capital for a semester. Evidence
of the success of our internship program are the job offers our students receive upon completion of their
internships or graduation.
The Sociology and Criminal Justice Programs offer annual Study Abroad trips where you can earn
college credit through educational tours to such places as London, Taiwan, or Germany.
Our flexible course formats meet the needs of today's diverse student population. We have On-Line
Forensic Courses, eight week courses, weekend courses, and the traditional sixteen week courses.

edge courses that address issues facing society in the 21st Century:
Old Dominion University - Norfolk(VA) - The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice offers
a number of different opportunities to students majoring or minoring in one of our programs. Our faculty
are among the most talented teachers and researchers in their fields. They have earned the respect of
students and colleagues across the world. In addition to staying current in their areas of interest, many
have published books, won prestigious teaching and research awards, and received funding for their
research and teaching endeavors. The faculty are committed to working with students both in and out
of the classroom. In some courses, our students are given the opportunity to collaborate with faculty on
different projects. Two student groups housed in our department--the ODU chapter of the National
Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice and In Support of Children--have made their mark on campus
and are regularly involved in extra-curricular activities throughout the year. Dozens of students are also
members of Alpha Phi Sigma and Alpha Kappa Delta, honors societies for criminal justice and sociology
respectively. Perhaps most importantly, our graduates report great success in finding their chosen
careers. To help in this endeavor, we host a Sociology and Criminal Justice Career Fair every year.
Some students have even reported being offered jobs on the spot at the fair!
Students can select a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in either sociology or criminal
justice. Many students elect to double major in both disciplines. We are also home to a graduate
program in Applied Sociology. Through this program, administered jointly with Norfolk State University,
we offer a Master of Arts degree in applied sociology. Graduate students can obtain a criminal justice
certificate along with their Masters degree.
Portland State University - Portland(OR) - Criminology and Criminal Justice is an academic
discipline that critically examines the establishment of legal norms and their use by public and private
agencies to control such symptoms of social disorder as crime, delinquency, mental illness, civil wrongs,
and discrimination. Criminal justice education began at Portland State University in 1949 with the
offering of a limited number of professional courses for police officers. A Law Enforcement Certificate
Program was implemented in 1965. This certificate program served the needs of the law enforcement
community throughout the urban and campus unrest of the late 1960's. It also provided the instructional
base for the further development of a comprehensive degree-granting program which could be
responsive to the total educational requirements of persons involved in the criminal justice process.
A baccalaureate degree was established in 1972. This undergraduate program has evolved over time
and today provides a coordinated series of educational experiences within an interdisciplinary social
science curriculum. The subject matter reflects the urban environment in which the programs operates,
and examines the entirety of the process by which justice is administered in modern American society.
This examination includes a balanced inquiry into the nature of crime, law and social control, and the
functional interrelationships of enforcement judicial, and correctional agencies.
The Division was previously known as Administration of Justice. In 2004 the Divison changed to its
current name, Criminology and Criminal Justice, to better reflect the expertise of the faculty and the
emphasis of the program.
The Division offers the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, an online Bachelor of
Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice, a minor, a postbaccalaureate certificate, and a Master of
Science degree. It is also a participating division in the Public Administration and Policy and Urban
Studies doctoral programs.
The Division hosts the Pi Sigma Upsilon chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor
Society.
Radford University - Radford(VA) - A Strong Academic Program...
Far from being a narrowly-defined law enforcement or correctional program, criminal justice at Radford
University is an interdisciplinary and professionally-oriented academic discipline focusing on many
aspects of crime and issues that impact our system of justice. To prepare students for the various
positions within criminal justice as well as for graduate education, the program seeks to provide a broad
foundation of knowledge pertaining to crime and related issues.
The department currently serves over 500 undergraduate and 50 graduate students, with courses
offered in Radford and Roanoke.
An Accomplished Faculty...
The department is staffed by nine full-time faculty members who are accomplished in both their
academic and professional communities. Radford University Criminal Justice faculty publish books and
articles, make presentations at national conferences, provide expert testimony, and work with the local
criminal justice community. In addition, the department regularly employs local criminal justice
professionals as adjunct instructors.
Many Opportunities...
In addition to classroom learning, the department makes numerous opportunities available to students.
Students may participate in a variety of student organizations, complete an internship program, study
abroad during the summer, or participate in other programs sponsored by the department.
A Rich History...
The Radford University Criminal Justice program was established in 1974. A history of the program was
published in The Dialogue, the newsletter of the Southern Criminal Justice Association. Click here to
read “A Spotlight on…Radford University,” authored by Dr. Willard Oliver (former Radford University
faculty), R.J. Beckwith (undergraduate and graduate alum of the program), and Nicholas Joyce
(graduate alum of the program).
Rutgers University - New Brunswick(NJ) - The Program in Criminal Justice is a comprehensive
interdisciplinary program that blends a strong liberal arts educational experience with pre-professional
instruction in the field of criminal justice. The program provides students with a rich understanding of
crime and criminal justice in the United States and abroad. Graduates of the program are well-informed
citizens on the topic of crime and justice, and qualified for graduate study or for employment as
practitioners in a variety of legal, policy- making, and law enforcement areas.
Rutgers University - Camden - Camden(NJ) - The Department of Sociology, Anthropology and
Criminal Justice offers undergraduate major programs in sociology and in criminal justice and minor
programs in anthropology, sociology, and criminal justice. Currently we have about 160 CJ majors and
about 100 Sociology majors, along with several dozen minors. A Master's Program in Criminal Justice
was introduced in fall 2002. Because the department brings together faculty in all three disciplines, both
its major and minor programs benefit from an interdisciplinary approach. While each of its programs is
situated in a strong liberal arts curriculum, the department is also committed to providing a program that
imparts practical skills to its students.
All faculty members in the department are engaged in ongoing research, and the department
encourages student involvement in faculty-sponsored research. An annual Undergraduate Research
Poster Session offers students an opportunity to share their research, and a number of students
regularly make presentations at professional conferences. Students also gain practical experience
through the department's service learning and criminal justice internship programs.
The department has been on the cutting edge in the integration of technology into its curriculum. All its
graduates complete their studies with strong computer and internet-based skills. With special university
funding, the department has developed a "Web-Enhanced Curriculum" designed to exploit the evolving
instructional technologies of the internet to their fullest. It includes elaborations of basic policies and
expectations, provides resources for student research and class work, and supports enhanced
communication within the department's programs. Our Web-Enhanced Curriculum was an important
factor in the department's receipt of the Rutgers University Programmatic Excellence Award in
Undergraduate Education in 2003.
Rutgers University - Newark - Newark(NJ) - The History….The Rutgers School of Criminal
Justice was established at Rutgers University in 1972 by the New Jersey State Legislature. The
legislature recognized the need for a formal program of study dedicated to preparing students to be
leaders in research, teaching and public policy to better address criminal justice issues. More than three
decades later, the impact and influence of the school continue to grow.
About Newark…
The Rutgers School of Criminal Justice is based on the university’s Newark campus, in the state’s
largest and most dynamic city. Newark is a diverse community full of social, cultural and economic

About the Campus…
The Rutgers-Newark campus has responded to a growing demand for students who want to enjoy on-
campus living in the middle of an exciting city by adding additional residential housing options—with
even more on the horizon. At the same time, the university’s neighbors - the University of Medicine and
Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Institute of Technology and Essex County College - are offering
expanded programs, and bringing new jobs and educational opportunities to the community. The
clustering of these institutions has fostered an environment for collaborative research and learning. For
more information about Rutgers-Newark, visit www.newark.rutgers.edu.
The Center for Law and Justice…
In 2000, the Rutgers School of Criminal Justice moved into the Center for Law and Justice, one of the
most beautiful and technologically equipped academic buildings in the country. The building’s
architectural features, including its brick structure, clock tower and steelwork speak to Newark’s
historical roots as one of the nation’s leading business and industrial centers. The Center for Law and
Justice also is home to Rutgers School of Law-Newark, the Center for Global Change and Governance,
and the Rutgers-Newark Provost’s Office. This environment encourages interdisciplinary collaboration
on many levels.

professions include policing, probation, parole, jails, prisons, juvenile justice, and federal law
enforcement. The Criminal Justice faculty welcome student inquiries about our Program and hope that
this brochure helps students in the planning of their academic and professional careers.
The Department of Criminal Justice is one of the largest on campus with over 300 majors. We have a
cooperative agreement with the Delta College Police Academy that permits our students to earn 12
Academy credits towards the SVSU B.A. degree for the police certification. We also have an elaborate
Field Work program where student interns are placed with criminal justice agencies for academic credit.
Our class sizes range from 20 to 35 students, allowing for meaningful faculty-student interaction. The
Criminal Justice offices are located on the third floor of Brown Hall, Rooms 315, 316, and 317.

theoretical and practical knowledge for students interested in professional careers in traditional law
enforcement fields such as corrections, courts, police, and probation; in administrative and management
positions in criminal justice and private security; and in law and paralegal occupations. Moreover, the
major's curriculum is intended to facilitate entry into graduate programs in criminal justice, sociology,
and law, while also retaining a humanistic understanding of the study of crime. The criminal justice major
at Saint Joseph's is distinguished by its emphasis upon creative participation, with student-faculty
interaction being maximized through field placements and independent research project.

students a commitment to “justice for all,” particularly as it relates to the poor, educationally
disadvantaged, minority citizens, children, women, and the physically and mentally disadvantaged. In the
course of the program, students can develop a commitment to values and the ends of justice.
The mission of the department embraces the University's mission and encourages students to work for
