Breaking Rank A Top Cop's Exposé of the Dark Side of American Policing
|
Breaking Rank, has attracted far more interest than I
dreamed possible. And, though it has its spirited
detractors, the reviews have been more than kind.
With the book now going to paperback, this is a good
time to refresh this website—and to add a feature
many have ask me to include: a place for comments.
Norm Stamper,
former chief of
the Seattle Police
force, has written
a story like no
other. Part-
memoir, part
polemic, Stamper
exposes the
unvarnished truth
— both disturbing
and inspiring —
about policing in
America today.
Opening with a powerful
letter to former Tacoma
police chief David Brame,
who shot his estranged wife
before turning the gun on
himself, Stamper introduces
us to the violent, secret
world of domestic abuse that
cops must not only navigate,
but which some also
perpetrate. Stamper goes on
to expose a troubling culture
of racism, sexism, and
homophobia that is still
pervasive within the 21st
century force, exploring how
such prejudices can be
addressed. He reveals the
dangers and temptations
that cops on the street face,
describing in gripping detail
their split second
life-and-death decisions.
I've created a "two-way
journal" which will allow me
to share my thinking on
particular topics, and to
capture critical reader
feedback. I'm not talking
conventional blogging
here—I don't have the time
to do justice to that model.
But I do promise to read all
messages and, periodically,
to offer a new journal entry.
An Ex-Cop's Agenda
End the Drug War . . . Vanquish
Domestic Violence . . . Make
Neighborhoods Safer . . . Drive police
racism, sexism, homophobia, brutality,
and corruption out of the institution . .
. Honor the Constitution . . . Develop
more respect for cops . . . Advance
Social Justice.
